What do the LED indications mean?(Brother HL 5250DN)

Description:

The technical term for the lights on the front of your Brother machine is Light Emitting Diodes (LED's). This FAQ explains the meaning of those different LED indications.

When all the LEDs are off, the power switch is off or the printer is in Sleep mode.
Pressing the Go button wakes up the printer from Sleep mode to Ready mode.




[LED Indication]

The Toner LED alternates turning on for 2 seconds and off for 3 seconds.
The Status LED is on. (Green)
Meaning of LED Indication

Toner low:
Indicates that the toner cartridge is nearly empty. Purchase a new toner cartridge and have it ready for when Toner Life End is indicated.



[LED Indication]

The Toner LED is on.
The Status LED is on. (Red)
Meaning of LED Indication

Toner life end:
Replace the toner cartridge with a new one. To see how to replace the toner cartridge, click here.

Cartridge position error:
The drum unit assembly is not installed correctly. Take the drum unit out of the machine and put it back in.

Meaning of LED Indication

Drum life end soon:
The drum unit is near the end of its life. We recommend that you obtain a new drum unit to replace the current one. To see how to replace the drum unit, click here.

Meaning of LED Indication

No paper:Put paper in the paper tray or the MP (Multi-Purpose) tray or  the optional lower tray. Then press Go.

Paper jam:
Clear the paper jam. Click here to see how to clear paper jams. If the printer does not start printing, press Go.

Incorrect Paper size for Duplex:
Press Go or Job Cancel. Set the correct paper that you want to use, or load the same size paper that you selected in the current driver setting. The paper size you can use for automatic duplex printing is A4, Letter or Legal.

Duplex disabled:
Close the back cover of the printer and put the duplex tray back in.

The Status LED is on. (Red).
Meaning of LED Indication

Front cover is open:
Close the front cover of the printer.

Fuser cover is open:
Close the fuser cover which can be found behind the back cover of the printer.

Dust on drum:
The corona wire needs to be cleaned. Click here to see how to clean the corona wire of the drum unit.

Too many trays:
Maximum number of optional trays is two. Remove additional trays.

Buffer error:
Check the cable connection between the PC and printer.

Memory full:
The printer memory is full and the printer cannot print full pages of a document. Click here to see how to solve this problem.

Print overrun:
A print overrun occurred and the printer cannot print full pages of a document. Click here to see how to solve this problem.

Download full:
The download buffer of the printer is full. Add more memory to the printer. Click here to see how to install additional memory.

Font full:
The font memory area is full. Delete fonts or add more memory to the printer. Click here to see how to install additional memory.


[LED Indication]

All LEDs are flashing.
Meaning of LED Indication

Service call:
  • If you see the service call indication shown above, turn off the power switch, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on and try to print again.
  • If you cannot clear the error and see the same service call indication after turning the printer back on, call your dealer or a Brother authorized service representative.
